Brikicho – Uncovering Hidden Women Artists in Kenya

Brikicho – Uncovering Hidden Women Artists in Kenya: A Landmark Exhibition at The Nairobi Gallery, 16 August – 27 September 2025
Nairobi, Kenya – From Saturday, August 16 to Saturday, September 27, 2025, The Nairobi Gallery will host Brikicho, a groundbreaking exhibition spotlighting the creative brilliance of Kenyan women artists whose work is often unseen by the public. Many of these artists create in home studios and private spaces, their talent and stories hidden from mainstream exposure.
The title Brikicho—inspired by the Swahili word for the children’s game “hide and seek”—perfectly reflects the curatorial vision: to seek out and reveal powerful, innovative voices in Kenya’s art scene that have remained out of sight. This exhibition provides both a physical and symbolic space for their work to be experienced, discussed, and celebrated.
Opening on Saturday, August 16, the exhibition begins with a Free Entry Day featuring a special curator’s walkthrough, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the artists’ processes, inspirations, and unique perspectives. This is a rare opportunity to engage directly with the stories behind the artworks and the women who create them.
Brikicho reflects an urgent need to expand visibility for women artists in Kenya, who have historically faced limited opportunities for exhibition and representation. The Nairobi Gallery, with its rich cultural heritage, serves as the perfect venue for this momentous showcase—bridging the gap between private creativity and public recognition.
This month-and-a-half-long exhibition invites art lovers, collectors, students, and the general public to explore a rich tapestry of mediums, from painting and sculpture to mixed media and installation works. By uncovering these “hidden” artists, Brikicho not only highlights individual talent but also sparks wider conversations about gender, visibility, and inclusivity in Kenya’s art landscape.
