This past Friday, August 9th, Juja Fairlands transformed into the ultimate cultural playground when Kameme FM and Kameme TV brought us the spectacular Mataha Festival. From 2 PM till late into the night, thousands of revelers gathered to celebrate everything Kikuyu in the most epic way possible.
This wasn’t just any ordinary event – it was a proper cultural explosion that brought together music lovers, food enthusiasts, and anyone ready to connect with their roots.
The festival attracted young professionals, families, students, and culture enthusiasts who came dressed in their finest Ankara prints, ready to embrace the “Kusema na Kutenda” theme.
Moreover, the venue buzzed with energy as Kenya’s top Kikuyu artists took the stage, while traditional food stalls served up authentic flavors that had everyone coming back for more. Furthermore, the non-stop music and dance kept the crowd on their feet throughout the day.
This was definitely one of those events that reminded us why celebrating our heritage feels so good.
When Culture Came Alive: Mataha Festival Highlights
The dress code compliance at this year’s Mataha festival was absolutely stunning to witness. Attendees truly understood the assignment when it came to celebrating their heritage through fashion.
From modern outfits beautifully accented with traditional brown and shell elements to those who went full traditional with authentic jewelry and attire, everyone brought their A-game.
Moreover, the backdrops and decorations perfectly captured the essence of Kikuyu culture, creating Instagram-worthy moments at every corner.
It was heartwarming to see Kikuyu people from different counties, different neighborhoods, and different walks of life all coming together under one roof. The unity was real, the smiles were genuine, and the energy was infectious.
Food That Made Hearts Happy and Stomachs Full
The food section at the Mataha festival was where tradition met modern tastes in the most delicious way possible. The aroma of freshly prepared mukimo, njahi, and matoke filled the air, reminding everyone of home-cooked meals that only cucu could make perfectly. These traditional dishes had people lining up again and again because, honestly, who can resist authentic Kikuyu flavors?
In addition, the drink of the day was definitely the traditional muratina, which had many people experiencing this cultural brew for the first time. Furthermore, it was beautiful watching elders share stories about how muratina connects generations while younger festival-goers got their first taste of this ancestral drink.
For those craving modern favorites, the event didn’t disappoint with smokie pasua, hotdogs, and perfectly grilled mshikaki that had everyone coming back for seconds. Plus, the beverage options catered to everyone’s preferences with refreshing jaba juice, sodas, beer, and various liquors, keeping the energy high throughout the day.
Performances That Set the Stage on Fire
The star-studded lineup at the Mataha festival was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. When Samidoh stepped on stage, the crowd went completely wild because this man knows how to deliver those emotional Kikuyu hits that touch the soul.
In addition, Waithaka wa Jane brought his unique storytelling style that had everyone singing along to every single word. Moreover, Joyce Wamama’s performance was a masterclass in how to connect with your audience, while John Njagi kept the energy levels through the roof with his high-octane delivery.
Kariuki wa Kiarutara and Wanjiine each brought their own special flavor to the stage, proving that Kikuyu music has so many different sounds and styles to offer. Also, the DJs were not playing games at all.
DJ Dibul and DJ Moh provided those wonderful Kikuyu vibes that kept people dancing even between performances. Furthermore, these two understood the assignment perfectly, mixing classic hits with modern favorites that had the entire crowd moving non-stop.
The Mataha festival proved that when you bring together such talented artists, the result is nothing short of magical entertainment.
