Kamene Art Residency Presents: Gods in Action – A Multisensory Exploration of Indigenous Spirituality by Khalid Shatta

Nairobi, Kenya — June 25, 2025 | This June, Kamene Art Residency is proud to host the Nairobi debut of acclaimed Norwegian-Sudanese artist Khalid Shatta, with his powerful exhibition titled “Gods in Action.” Opening on Saturday, June 14 at 3:00 PM and running daily through July 12, 2025, the show offers an immersive and evocative exploration of how indigenous communities across the globe express the sacred through art and ritual.

Gods in Action is a collection of ballpoint pen drawings, acrylic canvases, and site-specific installations, each piece layered with visual symbolism and spiritual resonance. Collaborating with Sudanese sculptor Heraa Hassan, Shatta expands his practice into the three-dimensional realm, incorporating sculptures and installations that embody the metaphysical ideas rooted in ancestral traditions.

Inspired by his deep cultural ties to the Nuba people of Sudan, Shatta’s work in this series examines how communities from the Nile to the Pacific represent the divine through form, color, movement, and spatial design. At once contemporary and ancient, Gods in Action challenges the viewer to reflect on spiritual plurality, cultural memory, and the timeless question of what it means to be connected to something greater than oneself.

Through intricate pen lines and bold brushstrokes, Shatta draws the viewer into a world where deities are not distant myths but active participants in the living landscape—gods that move, react, and exist in the rituals and rhythms of daily life. Each piece serves as both visual artifact and philosophical inquiry, bridging traditional African spiritual aesthetics with a global artistic lens.
